Kernl

From blank page to live product.

A two-person engineering studio in Liverpool. We design, build and run software for founders, researchers and grant-funded teams.

Where you're starting from

An idea

From a fresh idea to a product you've outgrown, we work out with you what's worth building first, then build it with tests, code review and documentation, so it keeps working long after launch.

A prototype

From hackathon builds to research projects, we rebuild prototypes for production, so they work the same for your users, with the security, testing, hosting and integrations they need.

A grant to bid for

We write and justify the technical side of the bid, so you can focus on the case for funding. As your named supplier, we take delivery risk out of it for the funder.

A funded project

The funding is won, with milestones to hit and a funder to report to. We're experienced in building to milestones and handling the progress reports and submissions funders require.

Selected work

Treatment Navigator open inside a demo EPR, showing how similar patients were treated, on a laptop

For Umbizo. In progress, due December 2026.

Clinical decision support for oncology, built to launch inside the EPR

The problem
Umbizo had validated Treatment Navigator's core algorithms on MIMIC-IV, showing a 27% improvement in treatment decision accuracy, in a peer-reviewed paper accepted by Digital Health. They were seeking funding to turn it into a production app hospitals could deploy.
The work
We were named as supplier on Umbizo's successful grant application to GM Business Growth Hub, for a six-month project to reach TRL 8. We built the app clinicians use, made it open from inside the patient's record with the hospital's own sign-in, and proved it in Epic's developer sandbox. It's designed to run on the hospital's own servers.
Where it stands
Three of four milestones delivered. Next: the clinician pilot and handover in December 2026.

Student instrument finance application form on a phone

For a UK music retailer.

A three-hour process, done in fifteen minutes

The problem
Instrument financing for students across eight schools ran on paper forms and re-keyed data multiple times, taking around three hours of admin per sale.
The work
We built a customer-facing application form that feeds an admin dashboard, where every application was tracked, approved, sent straight to Omni Capital Retail Finance and its contract printed. Omni's API was built for website checkouts, so we worked with their development and risk teams to get a new sales channel approved for the integration.
The result
Each sale took about fifteen minutes, with no re-keying and no paper. We ran and supported it for its first 12 months without a failure, through five-figure seasonal sales.

Meet the team

Two founders who both write code. The people you speak to are the people who build it.

Rory Murray

Co-founder, commercial and engineering

Runs the commercial side and writes code. Before Kernl he won and delivered full-stack projects on his own, from first call to deployment.

Ollie Darwin

Co-founder, engineering

Leads engineering at Kernl, including the clinical decision support build for Umbizo. Previously built a synthetic Medicare claims pipeline as a software engineer, generating 1M records at over 75% real-world accuracy.
